Delightful Shelter (Poem)

I seek a haven and refuge under which to shelter
From exhausting heat, i take my leave
My need is shade and my longing is rest
Until i find what I seek with great relief
Under a waving canopy of verdant feathers;
Amongst jutting and tentacular feet I accept
Refuge’s invitation where i take my seat
Weary head now resting against wooded robes
A host of creatures also find sanctuary amongst its frame
Providing nourishment from its branches and freedom to roam
I marvel at the selflessness that my deciduous ally bestows
A generous friend in whom so much life finds it’s home
The beauty of this humble tree stands as a gentle reminder
Pointing to the brighter glory and heart of the servant king
Jesus, the altogether lovely one, in selfless love for us gave
His life for our own and to our hearts hope would he bring
Christ is the unfailing and eternal shelter to whom you can come
From the heat of the ‘day’ that is the hurt, broken mess of our lives
He offers the shade of perfect undeserved love and redemptive life
And at his feet, dawning peace and acceptance joyfully arrives
