Selah (Poem)

He gives rest to the weary and increases the power of the week

Isaiah 40:29

There is an invitation to the weary heart

With gentle gesture my saviour bids to me

“Take heart child, your appointed rest is here”

“The futile striving of your burdened soul I see”

For He is the life giving well who never runs dry

quenching every thirst from life’s care

His intimate presence a fountain of delight

To you dear one weighed down by despair

As I lean back into the peace of his presence

The servant king humbly takes up his garment

In tender washing, his loving words relieve

The grime of wearied mind and strength spent

As my weary soul is kissed by divine love

My heart’s stoney exterior begins to break

Under the power of Christ’s care I am undone

His peace calls joy in my heart to awake

To all who accept Christ’s invitation to take rest

refreshment comes, not earned but received

For there in sacred union your strength is found

And upon your heart’s recess eternal love is breathed

Again can be heard grace’s gentle rhythm

a melody authored by Christ and sung to thee

as night of the careful soul is quenched

I again see, Christ cares, he cares for me
