The Vessel’s Treasure (Poem)

Such a fragile vessel of Earthen ware
I have humbly discovered myself to bear
but chipped and worn though I may be
My makers stamp adorns me for all to see

His intricate work of a design unique
Has moulded each person to silently speak
Great praise and glory of the creator’s hand
His artists signature visible through every strand

My maker has decreed my value infinite in his sight
I am his creation, a work of my maker’s delight
Yet the joy that doth spring for which I now sing
Is the treasure this fragile vessel contains within

For carried within this jar of earthen clay
Is a precious pearl of great price on display
A light shining from our hearts beheld to all
It melts the most calloused heart’s defensive wall

This sacred light: this precious jewel is Jesus no less
Stricken he was for our sake that his name we would confess
“My saviour; my Lord, why give your life for mine at such cost?”
“For love of you” is his answer “I could not leave you lost”

He is humanity’s redeemer who leads the broken sinner home
To receive welcome in spotless robes that are not our own
Now adopted as God’s beloved children, before His heavenly throne
Jesus is the treasure we so dearly carry; our eternal light and everlasting shalom
